SICS Senior In The Spotlight: Khadir Zachery
When he isn’t in the wrestling ring or hanging out with his friends, senior Khadir Zachery is focused on AP physics and AP calculus. “Science is my strong suit, especially since my physics teachers have made it easy to understand,” he says. “However, my biggest challenge is finding the time to focus on both my academics and wrestling. For me, English and writing require a lot of effort. Luckily, my teachers keep me from slacking off with their encouragement.” Although he has been attending Sabis since kindergarten, he still feels a bit shy at times.
“Luckily through wrestling I am able to meet new people,” he comments. Khadir has been on the wrestling team since 8th grade. He has been team captain since his junior year and in 2018 earned the title of Western Mass Wrestling Champ.
“Despite all his accomplishments, Khadir remains humble and focused. That, along with all his other skills, have him on the road to success,” adds Tom Campagna, athletic and guidance director at Sabis. Outside of school, Khadir volunteers his time tutoring younger family members. He also participates in the Black Men of Greater Springfield, an organization focused on providing mentorship and support to black youth in the region.
“I like that I get to be like a big brother to someone younger,” says Khadir. “It’s cool since I don’t have any younger siblings.” Khadir looks to attend Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the fall to study engineering.
“With engineering, I can see myself contributing to society in some way,” he concludes. “I’ve learned that hard work pays off, and I feel that engineering would be a field where my efforts will benefit the society around me. If you study and work hard, you can get what you want.”
