Official Memorandum

UPDATE 5/21/20#2

Dear Members of the Class of 2020 and Families:

This has certainly been a period full of a changing landscape and many first ever decisions regarding our high school graduation.  We have spent much time trying to both comply with the social distancing regulations as directed by our Governor and the desire by all of us to hold a traditional graduation.  After hearing from many of you and listening to your concerns, desires and suggestions, we have developed a final graduation plan that we think and hope meets everyone’s needs.

The May 28th cap and gown day will be held as scheduled.  We are hoping to make it a fun and festive few hours for our graduating class.  As previously mentioned caps and gowns, diploma covers, cumulative folders, yearbooks, and other small gifts will be distributed to the students.  The students will form a procession of cars while they drive through the line to receive their gifts.

There will still be a contest for the best decorated cars and music will be provided throughout the 11 AM - 2 PM time period.  Some videotaping will occur as we attempt to produce a commemorative gift for the Class of 2020.

With full support from our Board of Trustees and SABIS® Corporate, we have decided to cancel the virtual graduation on June 6th and instead formalize the August special day we were planning.  We will now begin to plan a  cap and gown graduation with all the traditions we have each come to expect and look forward to for August 8th here on campus.  The ceremony will begin at 4:00 PM and will include walking across the “stage,” receiving a diploma, individual picture taking and the entire class experiencing the day they so diligently worked to earn.  Of course, in the event that social distancing regulations are still in force or have been reinstated, we will be prepared to present the virtual graduation ceremony we had been planning for June.

We hope that by moving the date back two months, we will greatly increase the probability of holding this event in person.  Please understand we have done everything we believe possible under these unusual and ever changing circumstances.  We ask for your support as we try to honor the legacy created by the Class of 2020!

Congratulations,

SICS Administration

UPDATE 4/21/20

Dear SICS Families:

We hope you are enjoying the April vacation with your loved ones.  As many of you are aware, Governor Baker has closed schools through the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.  We appreciate what all of our families have been doing during this time away from school, as we know this may be a difficult time for many.  Our learning community will hold steadfast during this troubling time.  We appreciate your patience and support as we make additional plans for the direction we are heading in after the April vacation.

We are saddened for our seniors C/O 2020, as they are feeling so many emotions right now.  We cannot commit to what our seniors' graduation will entail, BUT we guarantee that we will honor their educational career and celebrate their hard work.

More information is forthcoming.

In the meantime please enjoy the remainder of the April Break.

UPDATE 4/17/20

Dear SICS Families:

Have a wonderful April vacation.  Unplug and stay healthy!

We will reconnect Monday April 27.

UPDATE 4/16/20

Dear SICS Families:

As you know, being out of school for this length of time is difficult for everyone.  Under these circumstances we have all increased our roles to include parenting, education, and working remotely in some cases.  Due to this, we would like to request that school staff work will be in operation from 8:30A to 5P.  If you have a question, please know that we will get back to you within 24 hours to answer questions and concerns.

This is an unsettling time for all, let us take a deep breath and carry on doing our best in these circumstances.

UPDATE 4/14/20

Dear SICS Families:

We appreciate everyone’s patience and flexibility during this trying period of transition.  We are currently moving forward with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) guidance and have created a remote learning plan.  We have been advised to create a plan approximately half of the time of the school day that includes interactions, teacher-directed learning and student self-directed learning.  Included in this plan is the use of SABIS® Digital Platform (SDP) and Microsoft Teams.  Teams was chosen over other platforms (like Skype or Zoom) due to its superior privacy, safety and ease of use parameters.  This platform allows interactive online classrooms and collaboration.  Students received email accounts and instructions for Teams from their classroom teachers last week.  This week we are piloting this endeavor.  We are trying it out right now…we expect some bumps in the road.  There is no perfect way or best way to do this, so please if you are experiencing difficulties call during our office hours (listed below) for support. We will help direct your concern to the appropriate personnel.

We are looking into different modes to make our remote learning plan accessible to all.  We learned from our online and phone surveys that we have students that will need paper and pencil packets.  Please call us if a paper and pencil packet is needed during our remote learning months.

Calling hours are:

Monday - Friday 9-11AM

Grades K-5:     (413) 783-3434

Grades 6-12:   (413) 783-2600

UPDATE 4/9/20

Here are instructions on how to use your smart phone to participate in online activities: (THANK YOU Mrs. Mudgett)

UPDATE 4/9/20:

Dear SICS families,

Due to the rapid responses and participation for the technology survey we are extending it until 3P today.  Please click on link below (UPDATE 4/8/20) to complete the survey if you haven’t already. Week4: We hope you enjoyed our heartfelt video messages. Tomorrow, Friday April 10th is a holiday and as such we will be offline to enjoy the long weekend with loved ones.  We encourage our SICS families to do the same! Be well.

Also, don't forget to check out our updated Supporting Departments' Page.

UPDATE 4/8/20:

For Special Education Families:  related service providers will be contacting you directly to set up plans that will work for you and your child during our school closure.

UPDATE 3/27/20:

Dear SICS Families,

As Week2 comes to an end we are grateful for a wonderful team of dedicated students, families, and staff.  This week, we heard from our SICS families that the website was difficult to navigate so we created a larger and easier to read notification on the homepage with a single link to the COVID19 UPDATES page.  The academic enrichment on SABIS Digital Platform (SDP) was uploaded in Week1, but in Week2 we found that the system works better for both teacher and student if the files are uploaded in PDF format and have changed our uploading procedure to reflect this.  The number of SDP users is growing substantially as families are actively accessing our resources during the closure.  In Week2 we also added additional resources from our supporting departments (reference UPDATE 3/25/20).

One additional resource that MA residents are finding useful is https://mass211.org/.

Spring is in the air today!  We are, once again, asking our teachers to unplug this weekend and enjoy their families and loved ones.  We ask that our SICS families do the same!

We will resume communications on Monday 3/30/20.

Be safe.

UPDATE 3/25/20:

Dear SABIS families,

Today Governor Baker extended the school closure to Monday May 4, 2020.  We are committed to our SICS families and will continue to roll out supports during this time.  Know that you are in our hearts.

Thank you for letting us know that it was difficult to find the COVID-19 updates on our homepage.  Good news! This has been addressed (obviously!) and the new revision has an easier to find and read link.

Academics is a big piece of our school, but could not happen without the encouragement of some of our other departments such as student life, discipline, nursing, adjustment and guidance counselors. Please click Supporting Department's page to find additional resources that you may find helpful during our school's closure.

Stay strong.

UPDATE 3/20/20:

Hello SICS Families:

Sending heartfelt well-wishes as we come to a close the first week of our school’s shutdown.  We had some steep learning curves and a few unexpected lagging periods due to high volume internet/ website usage; however, when all said and done, we are proud of all that has been accomplished this first week in these unprecedented times.  We are asking our teachers to unplug this weekend and enjoy their families and loved ones.  We ask that our SICS family do the same!

We will resume communications on Monday 3/23/20.

Be well.
