End of Year Letter from the Interim Director
Dear SABIS Families and Students,
As we move forward and begin to see the end of this school year in sight, I thought I would take a few moments and share with you some reflections on this school year and our thoughts regarding the reopening of the school building and the preparation for the next school year.
I would first like to thank each of you for your support and understanding during the pandemic period. When we first closed the school in early March, I doubt that many of us thought the doors would still be shuttered in June. Less than two weeks remain until June 17th and our last day of our online school. It has been a Herculean effort on the part of our students, our families and our staff to continue the learning process throughout the approximately twelve weeks of distance learning. Thank you to all!
Within these next two weeks we will gradually begin reopening the building for some staff and once we are open on a daily basis, I will notify you of our “summer hours” in order that you might accomplish whatever business you may need to complete. Summer school will be held online and you will be notified of the dates and times if your child is required to attend.
Looking forward to the fall, we have been in contact with DESE Commissioner Jeffrey Riley, who has promised us some clear directives and contingency plans for the next school year. Commissioner Riley was quite clear that the plans for the fall will remain quite fluid and flexible as we learn the path the virus will take as summer turns to fall.
The Commissioner has hinted that plans for the fall may include a continuum of ideas ranging from a full continuation of online learning to a fully open on-campus learning environment. Simply, our structure for the fall will be dictated by the virus and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
Commissioner Riley stated that public education in the fall will be “dynamic.” He went on to indicate that we will all need to tolerate ambiguity like never before.
As we close out our current school year, I thank you once again for your ongoing support, while I ask for your understanding and flexibility for the future. I promise to keep you informed of the developments as they become available to us and I look forward to continuing a mutually productive relationship as we educate 1574 students in Springfield.
