Xiomara Alban of Springfield has accomplished great things since graduating from SABIS International Charter School and earning her college degree at the University of New Hampshire Durham in 2010.
“I was very active as a student leader at college after learning how to lead while at SABIS. At UNH, I founded the first multicultural and only sorority on campus,” she says proudly, noting her parents emigrated to the U.S. from Ecuador.
Today Xiomara is Associate Director of Admissions at Elms College, where she says she is living the mission of providing access to a quality education for everyone.
“SABIS did that for me and I am carrying on that mission, while serving as an advocate for underserved populations,” she says. “I was able to gain a strong education from amazing teachers while at SABIS, where I was surrounded by a diverse student body and faculty who allowed you to thrive…we were true participants in our own success,” she adds.
Xiomara, 30, says she has many good memories of SABIS. “Out of the goodness of his heart, one of the school’s guidance counselors drove me and two other students to the University of New Hampshire to attend a recruitment event. It’s the perfect example of the type of investment SABIS staff have in their students.” Xiomara says that “SABIS is a place that will prepare you to be an ethical leader and a better version of yourself.” She concludes, “If it weren’t for SABIS, I wouldn’t be the person I am today.”
